In the still silence of morning, in the dark before the sun. Let me just feel this. I ask nothing more of you or this moment. Only that the stillness be still a little longer.

Let me feel the loss a little longer. Before the beetles descend and create new possibilities from the death of this one. Before the demands of things that don’t matter fill the voids and cracks where you once were. Before I wander the streets of day and look for the best of you in someone else, pretending it’s all new.

Let me sit here with my thoughts in the emptiness of ruin a little longer, before time will call upon the sun to wash down all scent and memory of you. Before the winds of change sweep with their finality through. Before I lay the pen to rest along with all my unfurled love. Let the stillness be for just a little while longer.

Soon enough the day and life and time will have their way.
And when the birds call forth the sun, I shall let it go in grace.
But for now, I have the stillness.
